Lets talk about Young Living oils!

I am going to start sharing a bit more about Young Living essential oils. I have been using them for my family for a little while now, and I thought it was about time to start posting about them! I am going to start with this post sharing some tips and info for starting out with essential oils. The proper way to use them, and some safety tips.

The essential oils described in this post refer only to therapeutic grade essential oils. I only recommend Young Living essential oils, as I am certain of their high quality. This is for informational purposes only. Different people will respond differently to the use of essential oils.


Some important tips to know as you begin using essential oils:

  • Mixing essential oils with sea salt or Epsom Salt prior to adding them to your bath water helps the essential oil to stay evenly dispersed in the water (instead of floating on top).
  • There are approximately 250 drops in a 15 ml bottle of essential oil.
  • Good “carrier oils” are: sweet almond oil, coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil.
  • Essential oils considered “spicy,” and should (almost) always be diluted with a carrier oil for topical use: Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Wintergreen, Oregano, Thyme, Black Pepper, Patchouli, Mountain Savory, Nutmeg, Marjoram, Balsam Fir, Coriander, Cypress, Galbanum, Pine, Ravensara, Ocotea.
  • Essential oils that ‘may’ require a carrier oil for topical use: PanAway, Peppermint, Basil, any of the Eucalyptus, any of the citrus (Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Tangerine, Bergamot*), Myrrh, Myrtle, and Melissa
  • Diffuse essential oils with a cold-air diffuser, so that you don’t destroy the precious healing constituents with heat.
  • “Neat” means undiluted.
  • If you ever need to dilute an essential oil because of sensitive skin, and you don’t have a carrier oil available, do not use water; use anything that contains ‘fat’… such as full fat yogurt, butter, vegetable oil, full fat milk or cream. It’s the ‘fat’ that dilutes your essential oils.
  • If you ever get essential oils in your eyes, do not rinse with water. Use milk or cream, which works immediately! You may also use a plain vegetable oil, but it is messier.
  • Young Living oils labeled as “supplements” are able to be used internally. Be sure to check which ones those are.
  • Peace and Calming blend is the very best oil blend for little ones (and big ones) who need a good night sleep!
  • Peppermint oil is one of my favorites! Be sure to have plenty on hand as you will use it more than you think!

Important Essential Oil Safety Rule:
Always have carrier oil or pure vegetable oil close by to wipe off essential oils if needed. Apply the pure vegetable or carrier oil to a cotton ball, tissue or handkerchief to dilute and remove the oil. Keep essential oils away from the eyes and the eye area. DO NOT rub your eyes or handle contact lenses with essential oils on your fingers.

The most common Essential Oil Safety Mistake:
If you get oil in your eye, immediately remove the oil by gently dabbing your eye with a cotton ball or tissue that has vegetable or carrier oil on it. This will help dilute the oil. Do not flush the eyes with water! Water spreads the oil and could make it worse. Oils are not water soluble.

One of the most important rules for essential oil safety is to always test an essential oil on the skin before use. Each person has their own unique body chemistry and just as foods affect people differently, so do oils. Testing the oil on the soles of the feet is the safest place. Always test here for babies and children and for those with allergies. Another location is on the inside of the arm just above the elbow. 10-15 minutes is usually sufficient. If the person you are testing is prone to allergies or unusually sensitive allow for 30 minutes. Testing allows you to see how their body will respond. Always ask about allergies.

The following are essential oil safety guidelines that are important for you to know:
Always have vegetable oil or carrier oil close by when applying essential oils. This is to dilute and remove the oil if necessary. Do not try and dilute the essential oils with water, it will spread the oil and could make it worse.

Certain oils should always be diluted. They can burn and injure the skin. Oils high in phenols, citrals and cinnamic aldehyde, such as Thyme, Oregano, Clove and Savory (phenols), Lemongrass (citrols), Cinnamon Bark (cinnamic aldehyde).

Always use a dispersing agent, such as bath gel base, when adding essential oils to bath water. Never add undiluted essential oils to bath water as they can injure or burn the skin.

Do not apply undiluted or neat essential oils to parts of the body that are hot, dry, or tender. Instead, use a compress that has been soaked in cold water filled with dispersed essential oils.

Use only therapeutic grade essential oils and oil blends. This is extremely important regarding essential oil safety. Before ingesting essential oil, or applying it to your skin, know and trust your source. Most oils contain chemicals that may be dangerous and toxic. I only recommend Young Living Essential Oils because of their purity and quality.

Time to brush off the dust!

I had to blow the dust off this blog! LOL! I wanted to pop on here a minute and just give an update on what all I have been up to. We just moved in to a new home 4 weeks ago, so as you can imagine, we’ve been busy these last few months with selling our old home, building the new one, and of course packing and moving.  All with three young kids in tow. And now the process of settling in to our new home will take some time as well. I am planning to post about some of the projects I am working on around here this Summer, and any other fun happenings.

I am excited to announce that my friend Rachel is partnering up with me in this endeavor of Ida & Mae! So she is going to be sharing projects, tips, and ideas on here and the FB page as well. I am very happy to have her come alongside me, she is super talented and creative, and we are always sharing new things with each other and bouncing ideas back and forth. So it just made sense for us to partner up together! In the coming months as we start working on things and share ideas with you all, we will share more about the things Ida & Mae will be offering in the near future. We are excited and hope you will enjoy everything we have to share with you all!


Here is a photo of our new home from just before we closed on it. They hadn’t painted the front door yet (it is black). I will post a current one another time. I tried to upload one with the front porch showing the bench my husband built that I painted and distressed, but it won’t load for some reason. I’m still working out the kinks in using WordPress…..

The Strawberry Patch 2012 Fall barn sale

I went to The Strawberry Patch Fall barn sale yesterday with my friend and her daughter. It was a very hot day, but we enjoyed looking at all the goodies and getting inspired with new ideas.  I was not able to take very many photos since the baby was done with it by the time I was ready to get my camera out.  But here are the ones I took.  I will share a link to the blogs who will be posting their photos soon.

Destination: Quality time with my Mom. Funded by Ida & Mae

I know I have been lacking in my blogging lately.  I would like to blog more, but it takes more thought, time, and effort than email and FB.  So it gets neglected a bit.  You may remember this post where I first shared about my mom being diagnosed with Non Hodgkins B-cell Lymphoma back in May.  She got the diagnosis while they were here visiting us, it was on Elise’s birthday actually. So when they left to go back home two days later, that was the hardest goodbye I’ve ever had with my parents. 

 Here is my mom right after she had her head shaved, when her hair started falling out. She knew how much I liked her hat so she sent me one last week. 🙂

Its been a tough 3 months for me emotionally to be 600 miles away from them while my mom goes through her chemo treatments. Things have been going well, her body is handling chemo well, and the tumor has shrunk considerably.  So things look very promising.  She has a minimum of two chemo treatments left.  Then another PET scan to see how much more the tumor has shrunk.  After her last PET scan, they discovered a mass in her pelvic area.  So she went in for an ultrasound to find out what that is.  She has a benign cyst on her ovary, and then another kind of cyst inside her uterus.  They want her to go see a Gynecologist about that one in order to determine if it is benign or some type of cancer.  So we wait yet again to find out the results of more tests on another “mass” in her body.  If it is something that needs to be removed, they won’t do any type of surgery until she is through with her cancer treatments.

Phew! Such a whirlwind of unanswered questions and waiting.  So all I have been able to do from here is pray.  And I know that is more than enough as we serve a Sovereign God who holds us and this whole world in His hands.  More than anything I’ve just wanted to be there to give my mom a hug and walk with her through this, physically, not just as a listening ear over the phone.

My wonderful husband (of 12 years tomorrow!) told me that it would be good for me to go see her. He knows how hard this has been for me to go through from such a distance.  We just didn’t know when to try and plan a trip up there or how to work it all out.  So I am planning for a 2 week trip up to Michigan in October, just me and the kids.  I don’t want to stay at my parents house since my mom’s immune system is basically non-existent right now.  Some sweet friends of mine are letting the kids and I stay in their garage apartment, and I am very grateful. 

However, with a long trip like this; driving over 600 miles up there, plus groceries and gas for 2 weeks, then another 600 plus miles back home, its going to cost a bit more than usual.  So for the next 5 weeks, all the sales I make from Ida & Mae will help fund my trip back home to see my mom.  Ida & Mae already contributes to our family’s budget, and I am thankful that I can help out in that way.  So in that same manner, I am working to contribute towards the expenses of this trip so that I can have some quality time with my mom as she walks down this road ahead of her.  If you are starting your Christmas shopping early, perhaps you may want to consider some Ida & Mae jewelry for your gift giving.  I would be forever grateful.

Centennial Park in August

There is a really neat park in Nashville called Centennial Park.  It has a life sized replica of the Parthenon, and its a great place to get some really cool photos.  All of these were taken with my husband’s iPhone, I and edited them on Pic Monkey.
